FAQ
About LIMEX
What is LIMEX?
LIMEX is a new material mainly made from limestone that can become an alternative to plastic and paper. It is an inorganic filler-type composite material that contains 50% or more inorganic substances such as calcium carbonate.
What can LIMEX be used for?
LIMEX can be used as an alternative to plastic and paper. As an alternative to plastics, LIMEX can be used in various ways such as shopping and trash bags, cosmetic containers and packages, hangers, cups, document folders etc. As an alternative to papers,LIMEX can be used in many print media such as backlit signage, posters, booklet, menu book, and so on.
More examples of the LIMEX products can be found on our product page.
What is the difference between LIMEX and plastics?
LIMEX can be used as the material for many plastic-based products while adding environmental contributing factors.
LIMEX is an inorganic filler-type composite material that contains 50% or more inorganic substances such as calcium carbonate. Containing calcium carbonate can help reduce the usage of petroleum-based resins, which can lower the CO2 emissions during manufacturing and disposal processes, compared to general plastics.
What is the difference between LIMEX and papers?
LIMEX is an inorganic filler-type composite material that contains 50% or more inorganic substances such as calcium carbonate. Since the production processes of LIMEX require little water, it can help reduce the usage of depleting natural resources such as water by approx.97%, compared to pulp-based papers.
A unique feature of LIMEX Sheet is its high durability and water resistance. Therefore, LIMEX can be used not only for general paper usage but also for outdoor usage.
What is the difference between LIMEX and Stone Paper?
Stone Paper is the name of the product developed by another company.
While Stone Paper is known as the alternative for paper and bag. LIMEX can transform into many different shapes such as sheets, food packages, containers, and bags.
For more information on the difference, please contact us through the inquiry form.
Can LIMEX be completely transparent?
LIMEX can not be completely transparent due to the white base color of limestone, which is the main component of LIMEX. However, LIMEX has translucent lineups, which are suitable for semi-transparent products such as backlit signage and document files.
Can LIMEX be microwaved?
Some LIMEX products such as thermoforming food containers have passed microwave testing. However, please follow the guidance of the final product maker about its durability and safety upon microwaving.
What is the origin of the name "LIMEX"?
It is a coined word combining "LIME", which comes from "LIMESTONE", and "X" meaning unlimited potential. “LIMEX” is a registered trademark of TBM.
Sustainability of LIMEX
Why is LIMEX good for the environment?
Limestone, which is the main material of LIMEX, is an abundant resource in the world. LIMEX helps preserve depleting natural resources by adding limestone-based materials to conventional materials such as paper and plastic.
Compared to general plastics, LIMEX can help reduce the usage of petroleum-based resins, which can lower CO2 emissions during manufacturing and disposal processes. Compared to pulp-based papers, LIMEX can help reduce the usage of depleting natural resources such as water since the production processes of LIMEX require little water.
Can LIMEX be decomposed in the natural environment such as the ocean and soil?
Currently LIMEX products do not decompose in the natural environment. However, we are developing biodegradable LIMEX in collaboration with partner companies. Please contact us through the inquiry form.
While LIMEX uses limestones, how can the preservation of the limestone resources be ensured?
Limestone is a resource that is abundant throughout the world and the risk of depletion is considered relatively small.
Can LIMEX be recycled? How can LIMEX be recycled?
LIMEX can be recycled. Compared to polypropylene (PP), which is a petroleum-based resin, the deterioration rate of LIMEX physical properties through recycling is lower. This means LIMEX's recycling efficiency is high.
When it comes to the actual recycling of LIMEX, please follow the local recycling guidelines and regulations.
What is the environmental impact when LIMEX is incinerated?
Since more than 50% of LIMEX is based on inorganic filler, the use of petroleum-based resin is reduced than general plastic products. Therefore, CO2 emissions from petroleum-based resin during incineration are also reduced.
Additional information for compounding and molding companies
What does LIMEX consist of other than limestone?
LIMEX is made from calcium carbonate (CaCO3), which is derived from limestone, and a small amount of resin such as polypropylene(PP) and polyethylene(PE) is added as a binder. We also have a line-up called Bio LIMEX, in which biomass resin is used as the binder.
What is the difference between LIMEX masterbatch and conventional calcium carbonate masterbatch?
One of the uniquenesses of LIMEX masterbatch compared to conventional calcium carbonate masterbatch is its uniform dispersion. Due to a high uniform dispersion rate, the quality of the products can be raised or the addition of more calcium carbonate is an option while ensuring the same level of quality.
What kinds of molding methods are applicable for LIMEX?
LIMEX is suitable for diverse molding methods, including blow molding, blown film molding, thermoforming, injection molding, extrusion molding, and spun-bond molding. We are developing applications for other molding methods as well. Please contact us through the inquiry form for more information.
Can I use my own factory equipment when manufacturing LIMEX pellets or products?
It does not require special equipment to produce LIMEX pellets or products. For the production of LIMEX pellets, general compounding machines can be used usually. For the production of LIMEX products, general plastic molding machines can be used usually. Please contact us through the inquiry form.
